William Stearns Davis was born in Amherst, Massachusetts on April 30, 1877. He earned a B.A. in 1900, an M.A. in 1901 and a Ph.D. in 1905 from Harvard University. He was a lecturer at Radcliffe (1904-1905), an instructor at Beloit College, Wisconsin (1906-1907) and an associate professor of Medieval and Modern European history at Oberlin (1907-1909).
